If you look on maps or most references, Echo Lake Lodges is in fact located on Echo Lake. However, if you ask the locals in Dexter, you'll find a contradiction. Up until 1955, Echo Lake was known as Puffers Pond, named after Matthias Puffer (1813-1870). The Puffer family was some of the earliest settlers in Dexter. Puffer married Abigail Spooner (1818-1875), and they had five daughters; unfortunately according to death dates, only three of them lived past the age of four.
In 1955, a resident of Puffers Pond wanted the name changed; without notifying Dexter residents, including the grandchildren of Puffer, Puffer Pond was legally changed to Echo Lake. There are still Puffer family members, and Dexter residents, who believe that the lake's name will always be Puffer's Pond despite legalities.
